Netflix Instant: Movie & TV Picks

The weather is finally cooling down ever so slightly but still it's still humid as hell here in Dallas. Let's watch some movies in a nice and cool living room. This week's picks are all pretty weird genre fare.

Look, this one might not have the best reviews, but this is a Joe Dante movie so it's a must-see in my book. The story deals with a guy whose girlfriend dies in a freak accident and when he finally moves on, his ex comes back from the dead to mess stuff up.

One of the first movies that made me think about cinema in a deeper level, this crime thriller by Christopher Nolan features stellar performances by Al Pacino and Robin Williams. The movie takes the grizzled detective played by Pacino who after being accused of tampering with evidence takes a case up in Alaska where there's no sunlight for a 3 months out of the year.

This is one that I have not seen nor will I ever but I hear that it's insanely good. My reason for skipping it? There's dog-related violence and I just cannot handle any kind of animal violence in movie. The movie is about stray dogs who after being abused amass an army and go after their human tormentors.

Netflix Instant: Movie & TV Picks: Oak Cliff Film Festival Edition

The Oak Cliff Film Festival is going on strong right now at the historic Texas Theatre. It's a great film festival and my personal favorite from the many Dallas Fort Worth festivals. to commemorate the occasion, here's a few of their past movies that are currently streaming on Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and Netflix.

Netflix Instant: TV and Movie Picks

It's quite the monsoon down here in Texas. It's almost June, and summer seems like it's never coming. So, if you're like us and you're trapped in your house because of flash floods, here are some great picks for you to enjoy and binge on.

This is a Netflix documentary series that goes behind famous chef's and their kitchens from around the globe. All the kitchens are one of the top restaurants in the world, and each episode explores not only their food, but the chef's inspiration and how they became who they are. A great watch for any foodie.

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
One of Tarantino's greatest films is now at our bloody fingertips. Even if you feel the film is a little long, there's so much to appreciate and love. From Christof Waltz's terrifying performance to the bar scene, which is one of the best written scenes in recent memory, makes this film rewatchable.

NO NO: A DOCKUMENTARY
I saw this last year at DIFF and was fascinated by the story of Dock Ellis and his famous no-hitter game. Oh yes, and he pitched it while high on LSD, or so the story goes. It's a great film not only for sports fans, but for anyone who enjoys great storytelling.

Netflix Instant: Movie & TV Picks - Bike Edition!

We're at that sweet spot for weather in Texas where the shade is cool and the sun is warm which makes it perfect bike-riding weather (at least when it's not raining like crazy). I'm a huge fan of biking around Dallas as it is a deceptively awesome city to explore on 2 wheels. To celebrate this bike-ridin' weather, here's a few movies that feature bikes prominently.

Netflix Instant: Not at all Scary Friday the 13th Edition!

With today being Friday the 13th, it would be totes easy to just recommend a bunch of rad or underseen horror movies. Instead, today I'll recommend three fun picks devoid of big dudes with machetes. Check them out below!

DANGER 5 SEASON 2
Yeah, yeah. I've talked about this show before and with high praise. But I'm highlighting Australian comedy DANGER 5 again is because Netflix has the second season now! This is a huge deal because back when S2 made its US debut, there was still fear that the last few episodes would be delayed indefinitely due to the terrorist attacks in Australia at the time. Thankfully, we have all of them now so sit down and binge watch them while you sip on the Perfect Beyond Chunderdome.

I almost feel bad Jonesy isn't talking about this movie, but whatevs. I'll be honest, it's a bit of a shame that this came out the same year as THE LEGO MOVIE because it's such a good standalone story and a great sequel to the original. The world has now had dragons for a while and we get to see new designs which are all delightful. This is a must-see.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN
With all of the jibba jabba surrounding Spider-Man's "return" to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's easy to forget that there's already an awesome Spider-Man working within an MCU-esque setting. This cartoon shows a high-school aged Peter Parker being trained by S.H.I.E.L.D's Nick Fury to be an even better hero. Spidey leads a team of young heroes, Iron Fist, Nova, Power Man and White Panther. The animation is great, the show is hilarious and each episode is great on its own and adds to the overall story. And to top it off, it has Spidey interacting with all of the Avengers AND Phil Coulson (voiced by Clark Gregg himself) is his principal! Who needs live action when you have this?

Netflix Instant: TV and Movie Picks

I think the snow is finally thawing down here in Dallas, and Spring Break is about to start. Perfect timing. There are loads of great titles to catch up on, and if you need a break from House of Cards, like me, here are some great titles for you to enjoy to help you procrastinate on spring cleaning.

Netflix Instant: TV and Movie Picks

It's Valentine's Day, and if you don't have a sweetheart to spend the day with, then there are a number of movies out there for you to enjoy. So grab some popcorn and your cat and enjoy!

HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME
I saw this film not too long ago and was very impressed with the story and atmosphere. The film is very tense and is brilliantly acted. A great thriller for those who seek a different kind of story.

This is a fun series the explores different aspects of the brain such as memory and what makes a person attractive. It's very well done and quite interesting, plus this is a great series all the family can enjoy.

MEAN GIRLS
This movie is so fetch. And what's better than watching early Lindsay Lohan and see the potential that was wasted away. Even though we've all seen this 100 times, it's still a watchable and quotable film to enjoy.

Netflix Instant: Movie & TV Picks

I'm sick so I can't think of a clever intro, but I can definitely think of a few good movies on Netflix!

BROTHERS BLOOM director Rian Johnson is mostly known for directing some of the most memorable episodes of BREAKING BAD. But he's done a couple of really good movies with this one and BRICK which we've talked about here before. This one deals with brothers played by Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo who are expert con men. They decided to do One Last Job and if you've seen movies, you know how well that goes.

This was a festival movie last year. I'm only recommending the movie because I find it to be an interesting mess. The movie itself is insanely dark with our protagonist being accused of the brutal murder of his girlfriend. He then starts growing horns that make everyone around him start telling the truth. The movie works soooooo well in the first two thirds of the movie and then it becomes a different movie altogether making it very uneven but it's also kind of cool to see Daniel Radcliffe acting so crazy.

I haven't seen this movie or the original. This appears to be a re-quel (remake/sequel) of it taking place 65 years after the original. The big deal here is that director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon also directed recent Sundance darling ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL, so it'll be cool to another of one his works here.

Netflix Instant: TV and Movie Picks

It's Super Bowl weekend. If you're already worn out from talks of "deflategate" and sportsball predictions, then there are plenty of great films for you to watch on Netflix to get you through the weekend. Also, avoid all bars if you don't want to be amidst the sportsball watching.

THE INTERVIEW
Now you have no excuse. If you didn't want to pay to stream this film or was worried the hackers would follow through on their threats of attacking the theatres on Christmas, now you don't have to fear! It's a fun film which definitely needs to be watched with friends. Also has the best use of a Katy Perry song in history.

If you're more in the mood for a dense, spy thriller, then this is the film for you. It's not a film that you play on your phone while you're "watching". It's a tense thriller full of dense plot and intriguing characters. You might have to watch it a couple times to full appreciate all the details, but it's worth it.

CHEF
I've been wanting to see this film for a while now. It's about a man who quit his job at a restaurant and in trying to figure out what he wants to do, decides to open a food truck. It's written, directed, and starring John Favreau, and from the previews, looks like there is copious amounts of food porn shots. Sign me up.

Netflix Instant: Movie & TV Picks - Expiring Soon!

This week's column will once again focus on movies that will be expiring soon. These are just some cool ones. Not really deep cuts but they're definitely worth checking out.
