Top Films of 2014 - Javi's Picks

I was going to start with an introductory paragraph, and then I read Scott Wampler's Top Ten for Badass Digest and I realized I couldn't top it, so here it is: Unoriginal opening sentence wherein I express the belief that 2014 was a fantastic year for cinema. Standard-issue follow-up statement relaying how this overwhelming number of great films made it difficult to narrow down my favorite titles into a manageable list of 10. Vaguely patronizing mention of the self-imposed "rule" that was applied during the creation of said list ("Must be titles that most people would have had a chance to see in a theater, not just at a film festival"). Paragraph closes with a bit of whinging about how I've not yet seen Inherent Vice or Selma, and am thus unable to factor them into the list below

The movies in this top ten were movies that really stuck with me were the films I was able to remember frame-by-frame a specific scene or sequence. Anyway, you can check out my picks in no particular order after the break.

Jonesy's Favorite 2014 Movies..So Far

2014 has been a pretty great year in terms of movies thus far. Thankfully I've avoided some of the bigger disappointments and bombs, but for the most part, I've found enjoyment with most of the films I've seen. It's definitely been a year of great sequels (which is a surprise), but there are a few original films that have stood out in my mind. My cohort has already posted his list, which you can find here.

As always, mine are in no particular order

Check it out after the break.

Javi's Favorite Movies Of 2014, So Far

2014 has been a surprisingly good year for movies. Every time a movie comes out that appears to be a terrible or ill-advised idea, it turns out to be amazing. As always, we want to highlight some of our favorite movies that have come out so far and I always do my lists, I will list all of the movies in no particular except my absolute favorite movie at the end. The unofficial theme this year seems to be badass sequels. Check out my picks after the break.

COHERENCE 2nd Viewing Movie Review - Javi's Take

COHERENCE
Directed by: James Byrkit
Written by: James Byrkit
Starring: Emily Foxler, Nicholas Brendon, Maury Sterling, Elizabeth Gracen, Lorene Scafaria, Lauren Maher, Hugo Armstrong and Alex Manugian
Synopsis: A group of friends gets together for a dinner party when a comet passing by the earth starts to have some unexpected side effects.

This is a special review for the upcoming Oscilloscope Labs release, COHERENCE. I previously reviewed and love the movie back when I first saw it in Fantastic Fest 2013. That review will be appropriate for those that have not seen the movie and don't want to be spoiled. Given the nature of the movie and just how dense it is, this review will focus on my impression of seeing it a 2nd time where I know what will happen and can focus on the details. Needless to say, there will be spoilers, and this review takes into account that you have seen the movie all the way and know the character, but you can always check out my Fantastic Fest 2013 review

Trippy Movie COHERENCE Has Trippy New Trailer

Yes, this is another COHERENCE post, but I'm a huge fan of the movie and I will not rest until more of you agree to see it. Previously we had my Fantastic Fest 2013 review, and then a clip from the movie. Now, thanks to the Oscilloscope YouTube channel, we have a full trailer. Check it out after the break.

New COHERENCE Teaser Will Leave You Wanting More

Back during last year's Fantastic Fest, COHERENCE was the tiny movie that could. It was taking a very simple philosophical/science-fiction concept with no special effect and became one of the most thought provoking movies in a long time. The good folks over at Badass Digest got the exclusive reveal on the new poster (above) and a clip teaser. I also posted the teaser trailer Check them both out below.

Fantastic Fest 2013 Wrap Up: Javi's Top Films

Finishing our Fantastic Fest coverage, Jonesy wrote about her favorite films here, and now its my turn.Piggy backing off what Jonesy said in her top movies of the festival, this was a hard festival to pick from. In the last few years, there have been some major standouts and this year really didn't have any, but not due to any fault of the programmers, it's actually because everything was that great.

So check out them picks after the break.

Fantastic Fest 2013 Wrap Up: Jonesy's Top Films

This year's Fantastic Fest came with much anticipation. The festival was moved to a different location, The Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline, because the Lamar location was still under renovation. However, as always, the team of individuals that put together this festival did no disappoint this year. In fact, this may have been the most solid set of programming I've seen in the three years I've gone. Out of all the films, only two were disappointments. It was tough to pick just five favorites, but I finally narrowed it down. But seriously, almost all the films I saw I would recommend.

Now onto my picks!
