Netflix Instant: Cool TV and Movie Picks

And we're back! Now that the DIFF has ended we are back to our regular programming. The summer season is just around the corner, but here are my Netflix picks this week.

A happy-go-lucky tale of depression from Lars von Trier. A fascinating character study about two sisters going through various points of depression set on the eve of the end of the world. It's emotional, bleak, and gorgeous.

As a teacher, I remember when this film was all the craze. I finally sat down and watched, and I definitely had strong emotions towards it. Even though I don't agree with everything the film presents, there are certain parts of the education system it highlights that are spot on and horrifying. An interesting look at the argument for more charter schools.

An absurdest play by Tom Stoppard which follows the minor characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of Hamlet. You remember those two right? Of course you don't because they're simple messengers. However, Stoppard flips the classic Shakespeare on its head and explores the history of these two fellas. A fun adaptation and full of existentialism goodness.

There Better Be Some Funk Music In This: Lars Von Trier to direct NYMPHOMANIAC

Might be crazy but he's got swagger

Director Lars Von Trier's MELANCHOLIA has been one of the top movies I've been looking forward to.  Cannes shenanigans notwithstanding, it seems to be a fairly interesting drama about the end of the world, starring Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsborough.  Well, the movie has not yet gotten a wide release and we already started to hear about Von Trier's next movie that will shoot summer 2012; NYMPHOMANIAC courtesy of ScreenDaily.

Lars Von Trier's MELANCHOLIA has a sweet trailer!

If you know me, you know that I LOVED Lars Von Trier's 2009 film ANTICHRIST. To me, it was the cinematic equivalent of drone metal bands such as SUNN 0))). So when I heard about MELANCHOLIA a while back, I was beyond excited. It has Charlotte Gainsborough, Kirsten Dunst, and Kiefer Sutherland in a story where there's a planet on a collision course with Earth. With the backdrop of a wedding, we see people's reactions to this impending doom, which seems very interesting. This seems to be his most accessible work yet. Then again, ANTICHRIST seemed pretty normal until the last 30 minutes. Anyway, please enjoy the beautiful trailer below. MELANCHOLIA has no release date yet, but it will debut in the Cannes Film Festival later this year.
