INTERSTELLAR Teaser Drops And We Still Know Nothing!

INTERSTELLAR is director Christopher Nolan's first film since he finished his Dark Knight trilogy. As usual, we don't know a lot about the film, and even with this first teaser, we still know next to nothing!

Bits of information about INTERSTELLAR has surfaced. Here's a very, very basic plot description thanks to Deadline:
INTERSTELLAR will chronicle the adventures of a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.
Check out the trailer after the break!

MAN OF STEEL Trailer Drops!

Could it be possible that a Superman movie could cause this much anticipation? The first few stills of the film looked a little cheesy, but then when the teaser trailer dropped, it made me sit up and pay attention. Also, seeing the teaser trailer on the IMAX screen may or may not have given me goosebumps.

Now, the full length trailer is here with tons and tons of footage including some humor and plenty of amazing action. There's so much to cipher through that this requires more than one view. Here's to hoping that director Zack Synder took a note from Christopher Nolan's, who served as a producer, book of how to make superhero movies and created a Superman film with some emotional depth.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Review- He Said/She Said

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Written by: Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan
Starring: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Morgan Freeman
Synopsis: The final chapter of Nolan's Batman trilogy. Batman must come out of hiding to defeat Bane who has plans to take over and bring down Gotham.

To commemorate the end of what can only be described as one of the more important movie franchises in recent history, we will be doing something a little unusual. We will be posting short separate reviews here. Then, later on in the weekend, we will be posting a discussion that will encompass the movie in a more spoiler-y manner and in context of the entire series of movies.

On a more serious note, regarding the terrible news coming out of Aurora, Colorado, we offer our condolences to the victims of the heinous shooting. We don't deal with politics here much and now is not the time, but rather a time of respect for the loss of fellow fans that were lost in a senseless crime.

So here...we...go!

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Trailer Drops! The Internet Freaks Out!

Javi here. Late last night, the Warner Brothers YouTube account posted the third trailer for the final Batman movie by director Christopher Nolan, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. What's interesting about this trailer is that once again, Bruce Wayne and Batman are not really the focus of it. Instead, you have Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anne Hathaway as John Blake and Selina Kyle taking precedence and we hear that Bane actually sounds pretty clear. In addition, the YouTube page confirms the name of Marion Cotillard's character, Miranda Tate. But you don't want to hear me talk about it. Hit the jump for the trailer.

Batman and Bane Fully Revealed In New Empire Magazine Cover

So apart from being super busy, and not wanting to be complete hit-whores, we haven't been posting too much about director Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT RISES until the really juicy stuff comes up. And this weekend's reveal is relatively juicy. For the past few months we have been getting lots sneaky set pictures of Batman, Bane, and Catwoman, but this weekend after a contest held by the magazine, Empire revealed the first looks at Bane and Batman. They will appear in next month's issue. Check out the slightly larger pictures after the jump.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES- Tom Hardy as Bane revealed!

Once again, director Christopher Nolan has nailed a potentially goofy character and adapted him to a more realistic look.  He did this with the Joker in THE DARK KNIGHT, and now he has done it with Bane in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's role in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Revealed! (SPOILERS)

It's not secret that I'm such a fan of twitter's own @HitRecordJoe or Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as he is known in other circles. When I heard earlier that he would be coming to the final installment of the BATMAN saga by director Christopher Nolan, I was even more excited. And now we have word from Variety about who exactly he will be playing. In the interest of keeping people as spoiler free, I'll put his role below. The character itself cold lead to speculation about the plot of the movie so be warned.

It's official: Batman has its villian and villianess

Finally, all the casting rumors swirling around The Dark Knight Rises can be put to bed.  This morning LA Times broke the news that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Catwoman.  Christopher Nolan states, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

Couldn't agree more!  I, Jonesy, have loved Hathaway since her debut in The Princess Diaries and loved her even more in her raw performance in Rachel Getting Married.  She will put a fresh spin on the role that was made iconic by Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry made Razzie award winning.

I, Javi, am not all that excited for this casting, but since I trust Nolan, I will be cautiously optimistic about it. My apprehension mostly comes from the type of character that Selina Kyle/Catwoman is, which is one of a seductress and a complete bad-ass.   Catwoman first appeared in Batman #1 back in 1940 and has had a varied history from going from a stereotypical villain where she was a cat thief (ha ha get it?), to an unlikely ally and even romantic interest to Batman.  I know that Hathaway is not all "PRINCESS DIARIES", and she is a very talented actress with a wide range, but it's the fighter/thief side of Catwoman's personality that I find it difficult to believe Hathaway could pull off.

She will be joining Tom Hardy, who has been cast as Batman's other villain, Bane.  Nolan said, I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”  Bane first appeared Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 (January 1993). He was a prisoner that was experimented on and had a steady supply of venom, which endows him with super strength.  He is most famous as the enemy that broke Batman's back in the mid 1990's, and he has since become one of the more dynamic and rather interesting villains in Batman's Rouge's Gallery. After the atrocity that was committed during BATMAN & ROBIN, it will be interesting to see if Nolan will take advantage of the nuances and complexities of this character.

Finally, I, Javi, will say that it is interesting that both of these characters are first purely antagonistic towards Batman, but at certain points they both become either allies or anti-heroes.  I think that there is a lot of ground to mine from and it will be interesting to see where Nolan goes from here.

The Dark Knight Rises is set to release July 20, 2012.

Inception

Inception
Directed By: Christopher Nolan
Written By: Christopher Nolan
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon Levitt,
Ellen Page, Michael Caine, Tom Hardy
Synopsis: In a world where people can go into each other's dreams,
Cobb (DiCaprio), does one last job, where he has to implant an idea instead of stealing it,
that will guarantee him getting home again.

Inception- He Said

Christopher Nolan is a director that has an almost Pixar-like streak of great movies under his belt.  With his latest movie, Inception, he manages to create a dense world of psychological and philosophical trickery.  Inception tells the story of Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his team of “dream thieves” that must undertake the most difficult job of their career in order for Cobb to be able to go home.  The premise of the movie is a high end that manages to prove engaging and complex but still understandable.

For anyone that has seen both movies, one will be able to see that Inception is the spiritual sequel of The Dark Knight.  One of TDK’s themes was escalation; while Batman kept trying to outsmart the Joker, he was always one step ahead, and the meticulous planning on the Joker’s part was top notch.  Similarly in this movie we have this plot that keeps on getting more and more complicated as we go through the movie, but thankfully it doesn’t get convoluted like a Charlie Kauffman story could.  The story deals with Cobb’s team trying to steal an idea from a powerful businessman, Saito.  After they fail in the trippiest way possible, Saito offers Cobb the chance to go home if instead of extracting an idea, they insert an idea in the mind of the heir of a business empire, Robert Fischer, Jr.  Inception, as it is called, is the hardest thing to do to someone’s mind, as it is a really invasive procedure.  Cobb gathers a team of experts in very particular fields in relation to the dream world.  The best character, that isn’t Joseph Gordon Levitt, is Ellen Page’s Ariadne, as she serves as the character that is new to this world just like us.  She helps make this movie understandable which is one of the movie’s great strengths is in building and making you believe in a world where people can go into each other’s minds.  The rules are very well established, and explained in a way that doesn’t feel like dumbed-down exposition.

This movie has the great ability to keep you glued to your seat; literally, I don’t think that I saw more than 3 people get up during the movie to go to the bathroom.  This is because, by the time that the actual heist and plan come to fruition, the amount of tension and what is happening to all of the character is so much that you cannot look away.  This is where I find this movie becoming legendary because the action and “in the moment” occurrences are just plain bad-ass, but underneath there is a lot more emotionally gripping and interesting in a philosophical manner about reality and fantasy and what happens when the lines are blurred.  For one, the CG is used in a relatively classier manner and the story has much more layers that can be the subject of many a thesis in film studies classes.  And as a good point to note, Arthur
(Joseph Gordon Levitt) constantly steals the show, whether its his funny back-and-forth with Tom Hardy’s Eames, or his amazing gravity-defying action scenes; this character makes dazzles you in his complete badassery.  He is easily the Boba Fett of this movie.

Depending on your point of view of certain events in the film, your opinion of the characters can shift.   I feel that some of the characters that aren’t Arthur or Ariadne aren’t as well developed as they could be.  When you see this movie, you definitely feel this is the Cobb show, where we see him deal with the repercussions of his past actions, but it is almost a detriment considering the players in the team feel more like spy movie clichés rather than fully fleshed out characters.  If you interpret the movie in a certain way, the lack of characterization makes sense.  Otherwise, this feels like really bad writing that feels reserved more to bad action movies than a brainy sci-fi thriller.

I have heard of reviews that are frustrated at not being able to keep up with plot, and to those people I say, they weren’t paying attention.  This movie has a lot going, and it is really busy, but just like a tasteful guitar solo. It serves the song, or in this case the movie’s story. When it’s all said and done, you get a movie that mixes the best parts of The Dark Knight and heist films coupled with Nolan’s mind-bending style.  In a truly lackluster and boring year of movies, this feels like fresh air, and this is exactly the kind of movie that needs to be seen, it’s either this or The Last Airbender.  Your pick moviegoers.
