Jonesy's Top Ten Films of 2013

We made to 2014, and it's time for another year of great movies. I ended 2013 seeing 271 films, 70 of which were released in 2013. Overall, it was a great and entertaining year. My disappointments were more difficult to come up with than this list. I narrowed my list to 15, but then it was like pulling teeth trying to whittle it down to a top ten. As always, my list is in no particular order, and look for my honorable mentions and festival mentions towards the end.

My cohort has already posted his top films, and now….

Onto my list!

Javi's Top Ten Movies of 2013

Try as I may, I didn't reach my goal of watching 365 movies this year. But I was fortunate enough to see some amazing films in the meantime. As I do every year, I am taking into account movies that were released theatrically during 2013, and as always, they won't be in any particular order, except my absolute favorite movie of the year. There's no pretentiousness here, just movies that either spoke or made an impact on me.

Check them out below.

Netflix Instant: TV and Movie Picks - Drinking Edition!

It may still be hot and muggy outside, and nothing helps with that more than beer...delicious, delicious beer. We are big fans of said tasty beverage and regularly seek out rare and delicious beers in bars around town. To celebrate this amazing creation and to go along with THE WORLD'S END hitting theatres today, I have brought you an assortment of drinking movies.

Cheers!

This black comedy follows two unemployed actors as they wait for their careers to take off. Of course it's easy to start drinking when you're faced with rejection over and over again. There's a drinking game that's not for the faint of liver that goes along with this film. It consists of keeping up drink for drink with each alcoholic substance Withnail drinks. I don't recommend that game unless you want to end up in the hospital.

There was a time when they took alcoholic drinks away from everyone!? Inconceivable. This highly acclaimed PBS series documents the passing of the 18th Amendment all the way to its appeal. And thank goodness for that.

BEER
My cohort introduced this little gem of a film to me, and he's that much cooler for it. It's a funny satire film about the advertising industry. It stars David Allen Grier, Rip Torn, and Hot Lips herself, Loretta Swit. It's so fantastic we are able to stream this film. You won't regret it.

Ins and Outs of The Rolling Roadshow

The Alamo Drafthouse has a reputation for quality theatres with great service and a myriad of new and classic films. But being the Drafthouse, just watching movies in a theatre wasn't creative enough. Drafthouse also wanted to give back to the community that had supported them, and thus, The Rolling Roadshow was created. The Roadshow takes movies outdoors where patrons can experience free screenings Drafthouse style.

Chief Operation Officer Bill DiGaetano, Creative Manager James Wallace, and Director of Operations Bryan Penley sat down this past weekend, and gave us some details of how to thoroughly enjoy The Rolling Roadshow and some exclusives to some of the events that will happen during their upcoming summer series.

"Rolling Roadshow started as famous movies in famous places, such as showing THE SHINING at the Stanley Hotel or showing CLOSE ENCOUNTERS at Devil's Peak," says COO Bill DiGaetano, "and then Roadshow has morphed into the community aspect by showing films in a parking lot and brining in local breweries and food trucks." James Wallace expands by sharing his excitement about bringing Rolling Roadshow to Dallas because Dallas has had a wealth films shot here, so they can go back to the roots of Roadshow and show famous movies in famous places.

Even though there is a pocket of Alamo fans here in Dallas, the Drafthouse is still the new kid on the block. Back in November, the Roadshow trekked up here to show THE BURBS to build excitement and to introduce themselves to the community. Thankfully, it was a smashing hit, and the Richardson community has welcomed them with open arms. And thus this summer the Roadshow has developed into a "coming of age" series.

All films of the Roadshow are projected through the infamous Alamo truck. DiGaetano explains, "It's a panel truck with two 35mm projectors, 4k digital projectors, whisper and backup generator, rolled up screen, all amps and a PA system. To set up a big screen on asphalt, like we will do in the parking lot for the summer series, we have to anchor it with four 55-gallon drums on each corner. It's all about the level of presentation. Crisp picture and great sound. That's what sets the Alamo apart."

Even though there are fun activities planned for the summer series, nothing will compare to the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy even on July 25th. In true pre-celebration style, the Alamo will show a sneak peak of THE WORLD'S END to a lucky 200 fans, then cap off the evening in the parking lot with a Rolling Roadshow of SHAUN OF THE DEAD and HOT FUZZ. "This will be the first thing ever shown. We will be christening the theatre," explained Wallace, "and this event, both inside the theatre and outside, is 100% free. Keep watch on our Facebook for details."

The Roadshow will become a recurring event in Dallas. DiGaetano understands how hot Texas summers are, and he promises there will be more events in the fall and spring. So get those lawn chairs, or Easy Boys, ready!

Exclusives:

  • Dallas will get it's own Rolling Roadshow equipment and crew.
  • DAZED AND CONFUSED screening will have a 70's muscle cars, props for everyone, and free pinball machines (though donations will be accepted).
  • THE LOST BOYS screening will have a blood drive a few hours before the show. Give blood and receive and cool sticker, fangs, and a movie pass to the Drafthouse when it opens.
  • Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy will open its doors for the outside shows at 6:30.
  • You can begin lining up at 3:30 for both the indoor and outdoor screening.
  • Those lucky enough to get tickets to THE WORLD'S END screening will have direct access to the Roadshow afterwards.
After the break, there is a breakdown of the tips you need to fully enjoy these events. Trust me when I say, these events should not be missed. Alamo knows how to throw a party in a parking lot.

Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy Is Coming To Richardson Drafthouse!

“Blood and Ice Cream” Trilogy Event July 25th:
Alamo Drafthouse Richardson Hosts THE WORLD’S END Preview Screening, Special Guests

On Thursday, July 25th, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Richardson will host a very special FREE advance screening of THE WORLD’S END inside the yet-to-be-open Alamo Drafthouse Richardson followed by a FREE double feature of the classics SHAUN OF THE DEAD (2004) and HOT FUZZ (2007) outside in the Alamo parking lot on the 40-foot Rolling Roadshow screen. THE WORLD’S END is in the tradition of the earlier movies as the final film in the “Blood and Ice Cream” Trilogy.

The Trilogy’s director Edgar Wright and stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost will be in attendance to introduce the films and take part in a special Q&A. Trilogy fans are encouraged to come dressed as a giant Cornetto ice cream cone, zombie, cop, or a zombie cop!

Alamo Richardson's programmer James Wallace had this to say about the event: "We could not be more excited to host the ‘Blood and Ice Cream’ Trilogy in its entirety as a part of our pre-grand opening festivities...and having the guys here to present it is just the chocolate sauce on top. When I think of filmmakers that ARE Alamo, Wright, Pegg, and Frost are at the top of that list. It's going to be a bloody awesome night that no movie nerd will want to miss."

THE WORLD'S END Trailer Is As Good As A Cold Pint

Edgar Wright is one of my favorite directors. His movies have always struck a chord with me in one way shape or form. THE WORLD'S END, his reunion with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, looks to be just as funny as the other movies he did with the duo, plus it's about a pub crawl with evil robots! What could go wrong?

Thanks to Edgar Wright for point out the release of the trailer, which you can check out below.

THE WORLD'S END International Trailer Wants You to Have a Pint!

It's finally here. After an almost ten year partnership, the culmination of the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy is upon us. Director Edgar Wright, along with actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, have tackled many genres in the films they've made together, including zombie romance, SHAUN OF THE DEAD, and buddy cop action, HOT FUZZ.

Now they're all back for an alien invasion meets pub crawl shenanigans with THE WORLD'S END. Oh, and there's beer. Copious amounts of beer.

Check the trailer after the break!

Most Anticipated Films of 2013: Jonesy Edition

Cheers everyone! I don't know about you, but I am very ready for what films 2013 is going to bring. Looks as if there will be the fair share of the popcorn blockbusters (IRON MAN 3, STAR TREK INTO THE DARKNESS, THOR: THE DARK WORLD), but there are some others out there that I am equally excited for. No surprise that my list is full of sci-fi films, but my list also weirdly has two films with Harrison Ford.

Check it out!

Most Anticipated Movies of 2013: Javi Edition

This is just a short list of movies that I'm looking forward to next year. It's not that comprehensive but these should be great fun unless they completely mess them up. The theme of this new year is definitely  "bad ass directors that finally have movies coming out after a long hiatus." Check out my picks below.
