The Local Haps: May 6th - May 12th

In this and all future editions of the Local Haps, we take a look at a couple of rad movie events going on in Dallas this week. Check them out after the break.

All week:

The Angelika in Dallas is the only place that I have seen that's playing two very recommended movies: UNDER THE SKIN, starring Scarlett Johansson as an alien loose in Scotland, and ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, where Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton "play" long time vampire lovers disillusioned with eternal life.

Tuesday May 6th: (this is a particularly busy day with both Texas Theatre and the Alamo Drafthouse having cool events lined up)

TEXAS THEATRE:
Tuesday will have the theatre showcasing short films in the first of what will (hopefully) be many Dallas Indie Shorts Showcase at 7pm. It will showcase the masterminds of local filmmakers and will be a cheap and easy way to show off some of the local talent around the area. Being the advocate for short films, I will be trying to make it to the inaugural screening. If you want to stick around a little later, they will also have usual their usual Tuesday Night Trash series with SUMMER CAMP NIGHTMARE at 9:15pm.

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE:
The Drafthouse will have a special screening of the 1994 black comedy, DELICATESSEN, as part of the Alamo 100 series. The bigger deal is that very sexy and skilled Bar Manager Dave Robb will be presenting some cocktail recipes to go along with the movie. I'm totally biased, but between the movie and the fact that I think Dave is one of the best bartenders in DFW, makes this a rad event to go to.

Wednesday, May 7th

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE:
On Wednesday, they will have two special screenings, one will be the (belated) 10th anniversary MEAN GIRLS Quote-A-Long screening at 7:35p. To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of Quote-A-Longs, if only because I love silence in my movie going experience. The other screening will be part of the Drafthouse's 2 year long James Bond series, BONDTHOLOGY with YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE at 7:00pm.

Thursday, May 8th
TEXAS THEATRE:
Tonight is the first of a few 35mm screenings of SLEEPYAWAY CAMP at 8:00pm.

Friday, May 9th
TEXAS THEATRE:
First screening of STAGE FRIGHT, a horror musical comedy at 9:30pm.

Saturday, May 10th

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE:
The Marvel-ous Cereal Party cartoon block, featuring unlimited cereal and a plethora of rad Marvel cartoons featuring the X-men, Spider-Man, and more! I've already asked and yes, they have soy milk for us non-dairy types.

KLYDE WARREN PARK:
The park asked some guy to pick out  a family friendly set of movies to show during the summer time. The first movie is 1946's THE RED RIVER by director Howard Hawks starring Humphrey Bograt and Lauren Bacall. Movie is free and starts around 8:00-8:30pm depending on when the sun goes down.

ANGELIKA DALLAS:
This is going to be amazing. The Angelika will be screening the original 1955 GOJIRA on the big screen at 11:30pm. For those that are wary of the new 2014 GODZILLA being "too dark and gritty", they should educate themselves and see just how dark the original is.

Sunday, May 11th

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE:
Don't go to anything! Celebrate Mother's Day. Unless she likes movies too. Then, you can take mom to the Broadway Brunch screening of  THE SOUND OF MUSIC at noon.

Monday May 12th

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE:
The AGFA secret screenings are some of my favorites. Past include JOYSTICKS, BEETLEJUICE, WILLOW, NEVER TOO YOUNG TO DIE, and the movies keep on getting more obscure as the series has gone on. This screening will start at 7:30pm.
