Netflix Instant: Movie & TV Picks - When Animals Attack Edition!

There's something about animal violence that puts me off completely. I will actually stop watching a movie if I see animals being hurt. Animals hurting people on the other hand is completely badass! Thus the theme for today's Netflix picks. I always love killer animal movies due to their allegorical nature and these movies definitely have that. Check them out after the break.

Netflix Instant: TV and Movie Picks - Drinking Edition!

It may still be hot and muggy outside, and nothing helps with that more than beer...delicious, delicious beer. We are big fans of said tasty beverage and regularly seek out rare and delicious beers in bars around town. To celebrate this amazing creation and to go along with THE WORLD'S END hitting theatres today, I have brought you an assortment of drinking movies.

Cheers!

This black comedy follows two unemployed actors as they wait for their careers to take off. Of course it's easy to start drinking when you're faced with rejection over and over again. There's a drinking game that's not for the faint of liver that goes along with this film. It consists of keeping up drink for drink with each alcoholic substance Withnail drinks. I don't recommend that game unless you want to end up in the hospital.

There was a time when they took alcoholic drinks away from everyone!? Inconceivable. This highly acclaimed PBS series documents the passing of the 18th Amendment all the way to its appeal. And thank goodness for that.

BEER
My cohort introduced this little gem of a film to me, and he's that much cooler for it. It's a funny satire film about the advertising industry. It stars David Allen Grier, Rip Torn, and Hot Lips herself, Loretta Swit. It's so fantastic we are able to stream this film. You won't regret it.

Netflix Instant: Movie & TV Picks - Alex Karpovsky Edition!

So this last weekend, I watched quite a few movies at home while I was packing, and I found a cool trio of movies all starring and sometimes directed or written by the same guy, Alex Karpovsky. Who IS Alex Karpovsky, you say? Most of the exposure everyone had to him was in director Lena Dunham's TINY FURNITURE as some hipster a-hole. Most recently, he has starred in the other Dunham project over on HBO, GIRLS, where he is a stand out character among the cast. Turns out, the dude is also a pretty good writer and director and I have three of his movies to recommend after the break:

Netflix Instant: TV and Movie Picks

I don't know about where you live, but we have had our hottest week in Texas this past week. All highs were over 100. So, I am definitely spending as much time as possible either in a cool movie theatre or my cool living room streaming some Netflix.

Here's my eclectic picks for this week!

A sweet little film about self-acceptance. Before this film, I only knew the lead, Jacob Wysocki, from his little cameo appearance in PITCH PERFECT. Here he embodies all kids who have never felt like they fit in. Also, if you enjoy punk bands from Seattle, this movie is for you.

This was a very stylized film I saw at Fantastic Fest. It's a strange obsessive story of a man who contracts a virus that killed a celebrity. In this world, people pay money to be injected with viruses that famous people had contracted. It's a way for them to feel "closer" to their favorite celebrity. This is the directorial debut of Brandon Cronenberg, son of David Cronenberg, who has definitely inherited the directing gene.

When a TV series is slated for the summer, you know it's usually not anything ground braking. Little summer series are something to play while you clean the house or explore Pintrest. Last summer, POLITICAL ANIMALS was that series. It's well acted if not a little soapy with all your standard plot twists: scandals, affairs, sneaky journalists, estranged son who does drugs. The series ends up being rather enjoyable with some strong performances. A perfect lazy Saturday pick.

THE ACT OF KILLING Review- Javi and Jonesy's Take

THE ACT OF KILLING
Directed by: Joshua Oppenheimer with Christine Cynn and Anonymous.
Starring: Anwar Congo and Herman Koto
Synopsis: In the 60s, Anwar and Herman killed thousands of people opposing their new goverment, now with a camera in hand, they recreate those killings.

Sneak Peek to Upcoming Events for Alamo DFW

The Alamo Drafthouse Richardson opening is merely days away. It's weird seeing that in print, but it's true! Not only does Dallas now get to bask in great food and craft beer when we watch movies, but we get to enjoy something that's always been unique to the Drafthouse...it's programming. The Drafthouse has been a trendsetter of showing not only first run films but always having a varied selections of memorable events and repertoire 35mm films. There are some exciting programming coming up, and the fellas of Drafthouse Richardson shared some insight.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD Trailer Gives Us More Loki Action!

While the original THOR gave us Loki, it definitely had a scope issue. Much like the first IRON MAN, once you step back from it, you realize there's not much that actually happens in the movie. I have been eagerly anticipating the second THOR if only because I want to see the world expanded and it looks like this is what will happen in the sequel. Thanks to YouTube's Geek Week, via Screen Crush, we have the newest trailer which was premiered at Comic-Con last month. Check it out after the break.

Godzilla Entry #26: GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA

GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA

ENDER'S GAME Trailer Drops!

There's a reason why Ender's Game is considered to be one of the best young adult sic-fi books ever written. It's smart, action packed, and actually has fantastic character development. And after seeing the teaser trailer and now the full trailer for the film adaptation, you can definitely say the movie will be at least one of those three things.

In the future, Earth is attacked by aliens called buggers. The buggers almost destroyed everything. Now to fight back, the International Military is training children from a young age to find the right leader to destroy the buggers once and for all. Ender shows that promise, and the book tells his story of struggle of being isolated and the pressure put upon him. Whether that will be portrayed in the film...the trailers aren't looking too hopeful.

Check it out.
