Most Anticipated Asian Film Festival 2014 Picks From Javi & Jonesy

The 13th annual Asian Film Festival of Dallas is coming up July 10th - July 17th and as always we want to highlight a few films that look like they might be worth your time. Of special notice I (Javi) was asked to help judge their short films and hand out award. I can tell you that  you'll find something great in there, but I personally recommend the experimental and late night shorts blocks.

After the break, you can check out our feature film.

JAVI:

WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN HELL?
This is a bit of cheat since both Jonesy and I saw this back during last year's Fantastic Fest, but since I assume most of you weren't there, I highly recommend this amazing love letter to cinema and the art of filmmaking that also happens to be one of the bloodiest movies you'll see. You can read Jonesy's review of the movie here.

BLACK BUTLER
This live action sequel to the manga of the same name. The story deals with an orphaned girl and the demonic butler she sold her soul to obtain. Together, they are somehow tasked with finding a serial killer that mummifies his victims.

SATELLITE GIRL AND MILK COW
When director Hayao Miyazaki announced his retirement, it was a huge loss for the world of animation. Which is why it's always exciting to hear about first-time animation directors and seeing some of the potential of greatness in their work.

JONESY:

RIGOR MORTIS
This is one I missed at Fantastic Fest, but I kept hearing great things. A homage to 1980's Chinese horror films, this takes place in an apartment complex which houses the undead including ghosts, zombies, and vampires.

ZOMBIE TV
In the future, there is an abundant zombie population. Zombie culture is growing, and now they want their own TV station...naturally. This experimental film is composed of shorts, animations, and everything else you could find on a "normal" TV station, including zombie commercials! This sounds like a good palate cleanser amongst the gore and horror films in this festival.

SWEET ALIBIS
Yet another comedy on my list. A buddy cop-type film where a seemingly simple case of a dead dog evolves into something even more grand and dangerous. Sounds quirky with just the right amount of drama.
