The Local Haps: August 17th - August 23rd

Yet another round of awesome movies all around our gorgeous Metroplex. Check them out after the break! Starting next week, I will be in serious study mode which means my awesome partner will be filling in for me when I'm not available.

Monday, August 17th
Alamo Drafthouse: As part of a series of Robin Williams memorial screenings, there will be a screening of GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM at 7:35 pm. And if you're there a  little early, you can to the Tough Guy screening of WARRIORS at 7:00 pm.

Wednesday, August 19th
Alamo Drafthouse: The theater has teamed up with a "sportsball" radio station to show movies every once in a while. This particular edition has them screening SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT at 8:00 pm.

Sundown At Granada: As always, there will be a free movie screening along with 1/2 off whiskey at the rooftop of the Sundown. This week's movie is MONTY PYTHON'S THE MEANING OF LIFE. The movie starts at 8 pm.

Thursday, August 20th
Alamo Drafthouse: As part of the Bangarang! series highlighting 90's movies, there will be a 7:00 pm screening of RESERVOIR DOGS. The classic Quentin Tarantino crime movie is one that you have to cross off your shame list if you haven't seen it.

Texas Theatre: Thanks to a reason that I won't say, HOWARD THE DUCK has come back to the forefront of pop culture. To commemorate this singular event, there will be screening at 8:45 pm.

Friday, August 21st
Angelika Dallas: The weekly After Hours movie of the week is director Shane Black's Christmas neo-noir that revitalized Robert Downey Jr.'s career, KISS KISS BANG BANG. All screenings start at 11:30 pm.

Texas Theatre: If you ever smoked weed in college, then I'm sure you heard about the supposed mash up of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and the classic WIZARD OF OZ aka DARK OF THE RAINBOW and how it's supposed to all mashup and there's some crazy coincidences that match up. It's actually harder to sync them up than you would imagine, so it's a great thing that the Theatre is doing a special screening at 9:00 pm.

Saturday, August 22nd
Alamo Drafthouse: The monthly cartoon cereal party returns with the Assemble The Team! theme will be full of classic 80's and 90's cartoon teams such as the Ninja Turtles, Captain Planet and others. As always, there will be delicious cereal to go along with the fun. It all goes down at 10:30 am.

Texas Theatre: Since it's been 75 years since 1939 (the greatest year in cinema history), there will be a series of special screenings of 1939 movies along with a live show by Matt Tollentino and the Singapore Slingers. This month, the movie will THE WIZARD OF OZ (unconfirmed whether it's 35mm or the 4K restoration). It all starts at 8:30 pm with the show starting at 10:30 pm.

Sunday, August 23
Alamo Drafthouse: PICK OF THE WEEK! As the final movie in the Assemble The Teams! month, there will be a special 35mm print screening of the Akira Kurasawa's classic samurai movie that Americans have ripped off for decades, SEVEN SAMURAI at 12:30 pm. Then, at the very awkward time of 5:05 pm, there will be a screening of the digitally remastered Elvis movie, THAT'S THE WAY IT IS. It follows the performer as he prepares for a Vegas show.
