The Local Haps: September 30th- October 5th

We're back! Thanks for putting up with us as we took a little break to be down in Austin for Fantastic Fest, and then have to get acclimated back into the real world. But now I have this week's Local Haps for you to check out with some awesome documentaries, dance parties, and a one-of-a-kind viewing experience (also the pick of the week) that you can only find in Dallas. Enjoy!

Tuesday, September 30th
Alamo Drafthouse: Now that October is pretty much here, the Alamo has some amazing events lined up for the month. One of the first will be a showing of the Carpenter classic, HALLOWEEN, at 8 p.m. If that doesn't interest you, then there's a special presentation of TOP GUN at 7 p.m., with a special pairing of Cedar Creek Brewery beers including a rendition of their Dankosaurus IPA dubbed (fittingly) Danker Zone.

Angelika Dallas: If you need some culture in your life, the Angelika is having a special presentation of Henry V from the Globe Theatre at 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday, October 1st
Alamo Drafthouse: If you've been nostalgic for some 90's music, the Action Pack has your Ultimate '90's dance party for you tonight at 8 p.m. So dust off your old Doc Martens and come on down!

Granada Theater: He's back! A FREE showing of THE TERMINATOR will begin around 8:30 p.m. at the rooftop of the Sundown at the Granada.

Thursday, October 2nd
Alamo Drafthouse: Another fantastic October pick is George A. Romero's classic, CREEPSHOW, at 8 p.m.

Texas Theatre: The documentary, 20,000 DAYS ON EARTH , which my cohort reviewed and loved. There will be multiple showings through the weekend, plus a special secret pre-show at 9 p.m. If shorts are more your style, there will be a showcase of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival Live Action shorts starting at 7 p.m.

Friday, October 3rd

Texas Theatre: Another showing of 20,000 DAYS ON EARTH will start at 10 p.m.

Saturday, October 4th

Texas Theatre: A documentary about New York fashion icons from the 60's, ADVANCED STYLE, will be showing at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, October 5th
Alamo Drafthouse: If a horror-comedy is more your speed and you want to introduce your kids to the world of monsters without the nightmares, then ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN is playing at 12:30 for your enjoyment.

Texas Theatre: Yet another chance to catch 20,000 DAYS ON EARTH at 7 p.m.

Dallas Video Fest: Here's my pick of the week. Dallas Video Fest is a small little festival that we were lucky enough to cover last year. They have many awesome opportunities to check out small, up and coming filmmakers and experience different events. One such event is called Expanded Cinema III: Mirage. Here are the details:
Expanded Cinema is a program of video art works wrapping the exterior of the Omni Dallas Hotel with audio simulcast by 91.7 KXT, curated by Jenny Vogel

Mirage is a place of mythical proportions that has served many cultures as catalysts for their imagination of the ultimate freedom or, alternatively, also chaos. The same is true for the city of Dallas. Whether it is because of the TV show “Dallas,” or because its role in the assassination of John F. Kennedy Jr., there is a layer of our own projections that wraps itself over the city’s architecture like a mirage. When night falls, the city turns on its lights and becomes a more magical and fantastical version of itself. The downtown Dallas Omni Hotel façade in particular feeds our imagination with its wrap-around screen of lights. The participating artists in EXPANDED CINEMA III: Mirage use the Omni Hotel façade to create a window into this imagined or fantastical version of the city and all its stands for.
The official DVF27 public watching party is at be the base of Reunion Tower, 777 Sports Street, Dallas, TX 75207.
Bring a lawn chair and cooler and, remember, clean up your trash.

Please arrive in the 7 o'clock hour.
The soundtrack will again be broadcast by KXT 91.7 FM at 8 pm.
