Netflix Instant: Cool TV and Movie Picks- Back to School Edition

So it's the end of summer for me. I'm a teacher, and I've been back in the classroom this week with the kids showing up bright and early Monday morning. So, for my picks this week I have two that feature child actors, and one that makes me laugh and will help me get through this week. 

SUPER 8

Not a perfect film, but it has wonderful nostalgia for anyone who's a fan of the Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment films. It's a fun walk down your childhood when kids went outside and created things with their imagination. Check out my review here.

DANCE ACADEMY 

I heard about this Australian series on our Alamo Drafthouse Media tour (here's part one and part two of that adventure). I'm a sucker for anything dance related, and I spent this summer obsessing over Bunheads. This series follows a girl, Tara, as she auditions and makes the National Academy of Dance.  Some of the dialogue is a little cheesy, but I have really enjoyed some of the dance sequences and characters. 

DEATH AT A FUNERAL

Finally! One of my favorite comedies from the past few years is now streaming. Forget the 2010 remake, the original has the English dry sense of humor and wit. If you're a fan of English comedy, check it out immediately.

The First Annual WDYMS Annual Summer Report Of The Summer

So another summer season has come and gone full of CGI and questionable acting.  There were some true stinkers, but there was tons of great stuff as well. So here we present our top movies of summer 2011.

SUPER 8 review: She said

SUPER 8 is not your standard summer popcorn movie, monster movie, scary movie..actually it's not like most movies released nowadays. It's big in scope, yet still feels intimate and heartfelt. On the heels of Spielberg's legacy, director J.J. Abrams has taken his reigns as an engaging storyteller and a director with a clear vision and proves once again his ability to make the supernatural feel natural, while becoming a master of the craft, lens glare and all.

Thanks to Harry over at Aint It Cool News for posting this unofficial, but apparently, best version of the SUPER 8 trailer. All I have to say is I am floored. Much like what Harry said, J.J. Abrams totally nails the tone that Spielberg and to a lesser extent Lucas used to achieve, where there's a certain sense of child-like wonder to it, even though there're horrible things going on. Either way, enjoy! And good luck trying to figure out what exactly is going on!
