Leonard Nimoy (Spock, William Bell) will voice Sentinel Prime in TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON

Well this came out of nowhere. The coolest guy to come out of the Star Trek franchise (I hate you for Priceline, Shatner) has decided to return to the Transformers franchise this summer as a voice once again!

Entertainment Weekly today broke the great news that Mr. Nimoy will be voicing Sentinel Prime! He is the mystery mustache robot in the teaser trailer who has ties to the Lunar Landing, and he is supposed to be Optimus Prime's predecessor in lineage of the Primes.  This marks the second time that Mr. Nimoy has been a part of the Transformers franchise.  He voiced the villain Galvatron, the newly re-formatted version of Megatron, in the 1986 cartoon movie TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE.  He only voiced the character for the movie, while veteran voice actor Frank Welker voicing the character in the subsequent seasons of the cartoon show.  According to the article, TRANSFORMERS director, Michael Bay, had to build up the courage of to ask Nimoy for the role.  Go figure Mr. Explosions, can get nervous.

Not gonna lie, this casting is really great.  Hearing him on FRINGE and STAR TREK, he will be the perfect voice to give to this character as he is supposed to be a wise but bad-ass fighter.  Think Yoda in REVENGE OF THE SITH, but less goofy.

TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON will be released July 1, 2011.  It is directed by Michael Bay and stars Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
