The Drafthouse Alliance: Get Drafthouse Films Movies Delivered to Your Doorstep!

The Alamo Drafthouse has become a staple stop whenever any of my friends travel down to Austin. And we cannot wait for them to finally open up here in Dallas! Their movie going experience is unbeatable, and almost all of that is attributed to founder Tim League's passion of creating a movie theatre and community for true movie fans.

A couple years ago, League branched out and created Drafthouse Films, the distributing arm of the theatre. Since its inception, Drafthouse Films has distributed FOUR LIONS, MIAMI CONNECTION, ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: THE WILD, UNTOLD STORY OF CANNON FILMS, KLOWN, THE FP, and the Oscar nominated BULLHEAD.

Now it's time for the next step. An announcement came today that Drafthouse Films placed out a call to action:
Our motto is simple: "share the movies we love with the widest audience possible." Under the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema banner — a progressive institution for movie fans, run by movie fans — we follow the same principles with our brand by curating a distribution label with only the movies we believe in. With this membership, you are joining us in the collective pursuit of diverse visionary and provocative films new and old from around the globe. Join us.

Their new subscription service in which members pay a flat fee of $124.99 and receive loads of perks:

  • Receive a current or upcoming Drafthouse Films release of your choice and the next 9 releases on DVD or Blu-ray automatically to your door step
  • High-quality 720p HD Digital Download of each film (redeem code included in DVD/Blu-ray packaging)
  • Instant download of each film's Soundtrack in 320kbps MP3 (when available)
  • Invites to exclusive Drafthouse Films events and screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and venues around the country
All shipping and handling charges are included in the Drafthouse Films Alliance membership.

The last bullet really got my attention. The Alamo Drafthouse always has awesome special events including movie themed dinners, rare 35mm screenings, and summer-long weekly parties. However, unless you're watching twitter or on your computer at the perfect time, a lot of those events can sell out within minutes. So, to be able to be basically on a VIP list for events and screenings is pretty awesome. They always seem to come up with new and unique events every year, and it's always exciting to go.

Now where can I find some extra cash??

Netflix Instant: Cool TV and Movie Picks

Happy Friday, dear friends. Jonesy here with my picks for the week. Again, like my picks usually are, they're very varied, but hopefully there's something for everyone here!

Not only is Mr. Gaffigan hilarious and spot on with his humor and commentary, he is also extremely nice in person. I saw him years and years ago and was lucky enough to meet him after the show. Super polite and surprisingly quiet. Now he has a new special on Instant that I cannot wait to watch. I hear his joke about McDonald's is side-splitting.

Hammer time! Not my absolute favorite of the individual Avengers films, but because of Tom Hiddleston's performance as Loki, it made me love it.

Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion in a Joss Whedon musical production?? Yes please! Originally aired on a blog, hence the name, in episodes, but now is conveniently all in one place. They story is funny, the lyrics are smart, and who doesn't love watching our own national treasure, NPH, sing? That's what I thought.

Oak Cliff Film Festival Starts today!

Javi here. We're big fans of the historic Texas Theatre here at WDYMS. They have pretty amazing programming and events going on every week, and I love the fact they have Frank's Red Hot Sauce for their popcorn. And as it turns out, the Texas Theatre will the main theater for the inaugural Oak Cliff Film Festival which starts today, June 14th, and ends on Sunday, June 17th.

I really like the idea of this festival as its a great way of showcasing some more local film talent and venues such as the Kessler Theater and the Teco Theater as well as the general Oak Cliff community. This is a great time for Oak Cliff to show itself off a social and cultural area of Dallas. Since I was a dingus, I didn't plan out my time properly, I won't be able to attend any screening but the V/H/S screening.

As is customary of the Texas Theatre, they have some really great 35mm offerings this weekend that most people should not miss such as SUNSHINE and LOVE AND A .45. There will also be plenty of live music, a lounge area, and some very interesting movies all packed into four short days. Check out their web site for the full festival schedule, and information on tickets and badges.

SINISTER Trailer Drops and is Ready to Take Over Halloween

It's difficult to remember a Halloween when we didn't have a SAW or PARANORMAL ACTIVITY movie to look forward to. Ever since those two franchises have dominated the scary movie fan base, all other potentially competitive scary films end up trying for the weird Spring release. Well now it appears the PARANORMAL films may have some competition.

The new horror film, SINISTER, came out of this years SXSW with positive reviews with some saying this film is bringing something new to the genre. It always worries me when reviews claim it's redefining/game changer. That usually means it's only one critic screening away from being over-hyped with scores of hyperbolic reviews. However, after viewing the trailer, I enjoyed the mash up of "found footage" (a secret weakness of mine...love it) and traditional film.

Check it out after the jump.

WRECK IT RALPH Trailer and Game!

Javi here. I realize that WRECK IT RALPH might seem like a bit of a WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT clone, but I don't care. Video games have been a constant presence in my life even if the last system I've owned was a Game Boy DS and that was only so I could play Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger. Either way, this trailer had me super giddy during the scene where all of the villains are hanging out. Seriously, Kano just chilling in the background is just as great as seeing Bowser and Dr. Eggman together.  In addition! You can totally play the actual game that the in-universe game where Wreck It Ralph comes from! Check out the trailer and a link to the site after the jump.

For Funsies: Get your quirk on with this MOONRISE KINGDOM short film

Javi here. So on Thursday as part of my early #JaviBirthdayExtravaganza, I did a three movie theater/three movie marathon that included MOONRISE KINDGOM, BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW and PROMETHEUS all in theaters across Dallas. All three are very solid movies each for their own reason. Today's post highlights the first movie, the new Wes Anderson whimsical childhood love story, MOONRISE KINGDOM. In the movie, main love and trouble child Suzy "borrows" a lot of books from the library and reads them to Sam during their adventures. Anderson released a fun video late last week showing off some of these books in their animated form while the local librarian/historian gives more background info on them. Check out the video below.
