Top Ten Movies of 2012: Jonesy Edition

2012 was a fairly decent year of movies for me. However, I did have a tough time compiling my list. Not because there were an overabundance of films I wanted on there, but because I couldn't find ten films easily. Even though I saw a lot of really good films, I didn't have many that just blew me away. Most were easily enjoyable, but none I cared to necessarily revisit anytime soon or had too many flaws I couldn't look past.

So, I have my ten favorites from this year in no particular order. I find it difficult to list films in an arbitrary order because how can I really ever compare PITCH PERFECT to CLOUD ATLAS. All these films were released in theatres during 2012. There are a few films that I didn't get a chance to see that I was very much anticipating (LES MISERABLES and ZERO DARK THIRTY), but alas I missed them, which I think every blogger has that issue towards the end of the year.

All of my picks spoke or have stuck with me in some sort of fashion, and I'm surprised (more at myself) that I don't really have flat out Oscar bait films on here...okay maybe one.

So for better or worse, here are my top ten films of 2012, in no particular order.

Javi's Most Anticipated Fantastic Fest 2012 Films!

Finishing up the post by Jonesy, I'll be highlighting most of the most intriguing and anticipated Fantastic Fest films. I'm not sure about my short counterpart, but I am discounting movies that I will be able to see in the theaters within the next few months from this list. Even though I really want to see FRANKENWEENIE (shut up), LOOPER, and SINISTER, they will not be anywhere to be found on my list, which you should check out below:

New International LOOPER Trailer

Hard to believe, but yes, there is hope after the summer season. Usually there is the lull until all the Oscar contenders come out, but not this year. Rian Johnson's LOOPER will be around to get us through the fall. We posted the initial trailer a couple months ago, but now the new international trailer has been released.

Of course if you want to stay completely in the dark, all trailers should be avoided. Even director Rian Johnson said today on his twitter, "If you're already set on seeing Looper, I'd avoid any trailers from here on out. They don't ruin the movie, but they tip a few little things." So take that how you will.

Check the trailer after the break!

LOOPER Trailer Drops!

Director Rian Johnson isn't exactly a household name. He's only made two feature films, BRICK and THE BROTHERS BLOOM, and has directed a couple of TV episodes from Breaking Bad and Terriers. However, that will probably change this fall.

His next film is LOOPER, a syfy time-travel movie. One aspect of Johnson that makes us here love him so much is he always seems to bring his own uniqueness to a film genre. BRICK was a film noir style set in a high school setting, and THE BROTHERS BLOOM was a con-man "period" piece. And now he is about to tackle science fiction. Yes please.

Check out the trailer after the jump.

This Beats Any AVENGERS News: PRIMER Director Shane Caruth Is Directing Another Movie

Javi here. Sorry Marvel nerds, but I'm more excited for the AVENGERS movie because it exists rather than the movie itself. So what's getting me REALLY excited? The fact that Shane Caruth, director of one of my favorite movies, PRIMER, is going to begin working on a new movie soon. For those not in the know, PRIMER is probably one of the best time-travel movies ever created.

The sheer complexity of it and the real-world logic behind the mechanisms of the movie have not been replicated since. But what I appreciate, as a local area Dallas resident, is knowing the micro-budget film was done here in Carollton, TX. The tale behind making the movie out of Caruth's own house, on a tiny budget of $7,000 is something I find so inspiring. Seems he has been done doing consulting work for WDYMS's favorite Rian Johnson's (BRICK, THE BROTHERS BLOOM) new movie LOOPER and is wanting to get the ball rolling on his own movie.

According to CHUD, Caruth will be starting his new project this winter, which will be titled UPSTREAM COLOR. There's not much else known about the movie except some character descriptions for the lead character, who will be a female, and other minor characters. I honestly have not kept up much with his former project A TOPIARY since it seems to have stalled out a while ago, but between CHUD and other comments I've seen on the internet, it seems that both of the projects will still be shooting with UPSTREAM COLOR being the first one.

Check out the link above to watch PRIMER on Netflix Instant. It'll be well worth your time. And then when you're done, check out this awesome image explaining the timeline of the movie.
